How to Develop a Mindset for Success: My Personal Story
Having a mindset for success is more than just hard work and vision.
I’m sure you’ve read time and time again how successful people are willing to put in the “grind” to achieve their dreams.
You’ve most likely also heard that failures are lazy, chronic procrastinaters who never take risks.
But what if you do everything you’re supposed to do and yet still can’t seem to succeed?
What if you do have vision and drive?
What if no matter how much time and energy you put into achieving a goal, it never seems to pan out?
Success involves more than just Hard work and Dedication
The truth is, there is more to success than simply putting in the hard work.
In fact, there are many people today who have put in very little effort to achieve success.
Not to mention the people who randomly become famous for being in the right place at the right time.
Many very successful people don’t even seem to possess a particularly great deal of talent.
It can be very discouraging to spend years and years trying to achieve something only to see someone else achieve it with much less effort.
It just reinforces that feeling of failure and makes it even harder to persevere.
My Personal Story…
I did everything “right” for years and Never achieved Success
I myself struggled for years to be successful at music.
I got up at 4 am sometimes and played music for 8 hours straight in the streets so that I wouldn’t have to work a normal job.
I made phone calls and networked. I showed up on time to gigs and never had a disappointed client.
And before that I practiced more than 8 hours a day for years and years to achieve the proficiency to be able to make a living playing music.
Despite working Hard, my Paradigm would not shift
The problem was everytime an opportunity showed up that might improve my paradigm ie. more money and less struggle, it fell through.
In one instance, I was contacted by MTV to be a guest star on one of their shows.
I had several correspondences back and forth, and then the conversation went dead without any explanation.
In another instance, I was contacted by a famous pop star’s manager to go on tour with her.
Once again, a promised lead went silent.
It always felt like there was something blocking my success but I had no idea what it was.
On top of that, I had been reading about positive thinking since I was teenager.
While I had had a lot of success in certain areas of my life using the techniques, there were certain areas of my life that just wouldn’t budge.
I finally gave up Trying to be Succesful in my Field
While in the beginning it was rewarding and fun to make a living performing music, the constant striving to make more money and trying to elevate myself out of my current situation became too stressful.
I stopped enjoying my craft as much and eventually, after 8 years of extremely hard and dedicated work, I simply gave up and took a job serving tables.
While the work itself was not nearly as rewarding as playing music, it was a relief to not have that constant feeling of frustration that comes from working hard and not getting the results you want.
For many years I just accepted that I would never have the things I wanted in life.
Afterall, I made a comfortable living serving tables. It wasn’t that bad.
Until it was that bad…
It wasn’t until I quit a serving job that I absolutely could not stand (with no back up plan) that I started reassessing my life.
After 35 interviews and a year of unemployment, I finally found another job.
By that time I was in massive debt and I knew that it would take years to get myself out of it working a “Regular” job.
All the dreams that I had pushed down over the years came back with a vengeance.
I again felt that frustration of wanting something that I had no idea how to achieve.
I had long been familiar with the law of attraction and the importance of having a positive mindset.
The thing is, it’s much easier said than done!
I realized that I had been trying to take too much action to achieve the results I wanted, rather than focusing on my mindset.
I resolved to do as little action as possible, ie. going to work, doing what needed to be done to survive (chores, cleaning, etc.) and practicing music when I felt inspired.
I Meditated Everyday for at least and Hour
Everyday I meditated to my favorite Joe Dispenza meditation.
I cut down on my drinking and did my best to “think positive” when I could. I did not take any “Actions” towards my goals besides that.
You can read the story in depth here.
After several months of doing this I felt divinely inspired to start experimenting with different products to sell.
I also felt inspired to pick up two of my old you tube channels and start writing in this blog again (I had started it a year before but stopped writing because the whole process seemed overwhelming).
Then I decided stop pining for someone to believe in my music, and start producing it myself.
I took a couple courses on music production, and asked my friend to help my to make music videos.
I knew next to nothing about edditing, but it just felt like the right course of action.
Then I decided to get certified in lifecoaching and just put myself “out there” and see what happened.
I felt an enormous surge of energy coming through me and I knew that it was what Abraham Hicks referred to as “Inspired Action.
Essentially, my life changed instantly.
I went from doing nothing to being divinely inspired to what would become an online business.
The reason I am relaying this story is because I know I am not the only one that has had this struggle.
There are many people like myself who cannot be satisfied with the status quo.
The following method is the one that I employed to change my mindset enough to get real results.
It is my desire that you can use it to make changes in your own life.
How to Develop a Mindset for Success…
There is no one size fits all approach to developing a mindset for a success, but in order to get results you must have a set of beliefs in line with your desires.
How to Work with your Beliefs…
Get a journal and ask yourself honesty what you believe about yourself.
Do you think you are worthy of success? Do you believe you can have the things you want?
Following are two Popular Beliefs that block Success….
#1 We Can’t have the things we really want…
When I started to make my mindset a priority, my beliefs started becoming clear to me.
The first belief I had was revealed when a memory came to me during meditation. I was in kindergarten sitting at a table with my classmates during art time.
Both of my classmates had giant boxes of crayons with every color imaginable. I had a box of five crayons because that was the minimum requirement for art class.
They had at least three shades of every color, but the color that stood out to me most was copper.
I was fascinated by that color and wanted to use it in my drawing, but I couldn’t because I only had five colors.
When class was done I noticed that my classmate had forgotten the copper crayon on the table.
There was only a quarter a crayon left but I still felt guilty taking it. I hid in my cubby and kept it there for weeks.
I was so happy just knowing it was there, and when I eventually gave it back (stealing was wrong, afterall) I felt very sad.
It seems like a silly memory but in my meditation I felt that feeling as strongly as if I was actually there, and I realized it was the same feeling I felt all those years… I wanted more than I could seem to have.
I realized that it was that belief that was holding me back all those years.
It was that feeling that I couldn’t have all the crayons. That I was stuck with the five basic colors.
It was that same feeling I’d felt trying to make it in music. A longing for something and yet believing at the time that I would never have it.
I could have enough to have my basic needs met but I would never have all the beautiful colors I wanted.
What I’m getting at is that if you really don’t believe you can have “the crayons” then no amount of passion, or dedication, or even vision will get you them.
#2 The Belief that Life has to be a struggle
Another common belief that can stand in the way of success is the belief that life has to be a struggle.
I know now that even while I was striving to better myself, I had the belief that life was fundamentally about struggle.
It is a common belief that everyone struggles for money. That everyone must work hard to earn those two days of freedom a week.
I grew up in a loving working class farm and am grateful for the values instilled in me.
I was taught the importance of human connection and stealing and being greedy is wrong.
The truth is, I would rather have human connection over money.
The problem was I didn’t even particularly enjoy working.
I wanted 7 days of freedom, not just two. Being self employed allowed me more freedom but it was still a constant grind with very little free time.
Having that belief that life had to involve struggle and work did not coincide with my desire. And yet it was so ingrained in me, I didn’t even notice it was there.
If I were to achieve a great deal more money or a situation that didn’t involve me working so hard then I would not have to struggle.
That would go against my idea of what life was.
Ask yourself if you have a similar belief…
If you are someone that simply can’t seem to achieve success then I suggest asking yourself if you might have similar beliefs.
Of course, they are not the only limiting belief your might possess, but I have found them to be two of the main beliefs stopping people from living the lives they really want to live.
2) Change the way you feel
As simple as it sounds, having a success mindset is really about feeling as if you are already succesful.
It is about believing that your dreams are possible and that you are worthy of having them.
This is extremely hard at first, but it can be done.
Ask yourself how a succesful person would feel.
Imagine yourself living where you want to live and doing the things you want to do.
The important thing is that you actually create the emotion you think you would feel if you were succesful.
There are many inspirational speakers such as Tony Robbins and Abraham Hicks who offer many different exercises to achieving this state.
I had amazing success achieving this optimal state by listening to Joe Dispenza meditations.
The important thing is to realize that you may not be able to change your state overnight. It often take a lot of practice but it is worth it.
3) Embrace Failure
Developing a succesful mindset does often mean failing time and time again.
Almost every succesful person has experienced an enormous amount of failure.
I have personally started to embrace failure as a part of my life. I fail at a lot of things because I try a lot of things.
Rather than feeling like a failure because things don’t work out, I congratulate myself for trying them.
If nothing else, I gain insight even when I fail at something.
I hope you found these tips helpful!
There is no one size fits all approach to developing a succesful mindset but I have found working with beliefs, practicing the feeling of success and embracing failure extremely helpful.
