Is Harp Hard to Learn?

The harp isn’t hard to learn if you start with the basic movements and learn a little bit at a time.

The harp is a lot like a piano, but it is a little harder than a piano to learn because you have to take your hands off the string to play the sharps and flats.

Although it isn’t hard to learn how to play the harp, you do have to practice regularly to learn quickly.

Commonly asked Questions about the Harp

How long does it take to Learn the Harp?

With regular practice use can learn to play a simple song on the harp in less than a month.

How often should I practice the Harp?

If you are serious about learning to play the harp I recommend dedicating at least 20 minutes a day for 5 days a week to practice.

If this is too much, you can practice less and still get results.  The important thing is coming up with a realistic practice schedule and sticking to it.

Do I need to own a Harp?

You don’t have to own a harp, but you do need to have a harp to practice on regularly.

There are rent to own programs if you are not ready to purchase a harp.

What kind of harp should I get?

It depends on what you want to do with the harp.

If you want to play complex classical pieces you need a pedal harp.

You can play anything on a pedal harp, but they are expensive and hard to transport.

If you don’t plan on playing complex music, you can start with a lever harp (link).

To play professionally, I recommend getting a lever harp with at least 33-36 strings.

However, if this is too expensive, you can start with a harp with less range at first.

Do I need to cut my nails to Play the Harp?

Most likely. It is very hard to play harp with long nails as you will need to pluck the strings with your fingers.

Long nails make it very hard to pluck the strings.

How much do Harp Lessons cost?

Today private harp lessons usually cost between 60 dollars to 150 dollars an hour.

There are also affordable online courses to get started. I designed this online harp course for absolute beginners. It covers all the basics of learning the harp such as proper hand position.

I do recommend supplementing any course or online lessons with private lessons to make sure that you are doing the exercises properly.

Can you Learn Harp at any Age?

Absolutely.  It is never too late to learn the harp.  I have had students start to learn the harp in their 60’s and beyond.

Whether you just want to play the harp for fun, or play professionally, it doesn’t take too long to learn if you practice regularly.

I first started playing classical music on the harp and went on to play it professionally formany years.

Now my greatest passion is putting harp music to the songs I write, and making music videos.

There is really no limit to what you can do with the harp!
